Lucas Pino No Net Nonet - The Answer is No

Sound is like a rainbow, you hear every color. On the saxophone, the entire tonal and color palate should be available. I like to draw on a wide range of influences even within one solo, going from a very bright to dark sound, using straight tone or subtone. Music should be operatic, dramatic, and full of gesture. It should tell a story and sing a song simultaneously. Music should be a stimulus that activates the listener’s imagination and transports them to another place, where anything is possible.
— Lucas Pino

The No Net Nonet is a swinging, acoustic nine-piece band in the straight-ahead Jazz tradition. Formed by Lucas Pino in 2009, the Nonet has evolved to include some of the finest musicians on the New York scene, featuring the unique voices of each member of the improvising ensemble. The band possesses the intimacy of a small jazz combo, while displaying the power and textural gestures of a big band or symphonic orchestra. Pino’s writing is inspired by a diverse musical aesthetic including Maria Schneider, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, and John Williams. He leads from the Tenor Sax chair, exhibiting an unparalleled technical fluidity and prowess. “The Answer Is No” is the band’s follow-up release to “No Net Nonet” (2015), and features seven highly inventive original compositions by Pino. “The Answer Is No” is the response to a world inundating us with constant opinions, ideas, and manufactured narratives; it is an invitation to listeners, to unchain themselves from any preconceived expectations, opening them up to infinite possibilities.
